Day 33: If you don’t take care of yourself, who will?

I suspect that I’ve written about this before, but to be honest, I’m too lazy to go back and look!

Those of us in the helping profession hear the words “self care” so often that we become numb to its meaning.

It’s a phrase thrown around in classrooms, and the idea is nice… But let’s face it: self care is a luxury. Right ? One people like us can’t possibly afford.

I call BULLSHIT! Self care is a NECESSITY we can’t afford to go without.

Here’s the thing. We work for imperfect systems that are designed with good intentions, but most of them fail to really look after their people. And that’s just a reality. It’s totally a reality we can manage, with a little wake up call.

If we’re giving everything we have to others in our lives, we are failing ourselves. It’s not anyone else’s job to fill my cup, and if I don’t want to run out of juice, I better be doing something about it.

This week, I have made it a point to treat myself well, and it’s quickly becoming a favorite habit. Check it out:
